ABOUT HARVEY: [CW: Touches on mental health, mind-control, hallucinations, brain implants]
Harvey is the name Crichton has given to the neural implant embedded in his brain. The "neural clone" Harvey is a copy of Crichton's enemy, Scorpius, that has been written into the chip and programmed with the purpose of protecting and influencing Crichton until he can be convinced to divulge the secret of wormhole technology that Crichton also has locked away in his memory. Crichton was not meant to be aware of the clone's existence, but due to a potential malfunction in the chip, Crichton has now gained the ability to converse with the clone and is fully aware of its existence in his mind.
- Harvey can manifest himself to Crichton as an auditory and visual hallucination in the physical world, however, Crichton has expressly forbidden Harvey from doing that. So, in most cases, Crichton will speak with Harvey within a mental world made up of memories combined with Crichton's imagination. Harvey is capable of manipulating this mental world to make Crichton see, hear, and feel things as if they are real.
NOTE: If a mind-reader tries to read Crichton's thoughts, they will encounter Harvey. The clone is programmed to defend Crichton's mind from intrusions; he will be hostile to any uninvited attempts to penetrate Crichton's memories. Please discuss with me before having your character attempt any type of mind-reading on Crichton.
- Harvey is not a mental illness. However, the way he manifests can be similar to how Dissociative Identity Disorder is described. When Harvey is at his strongest, he is sometimes able to control Crichton's thoughts and actions, cause Crichton to lose large amounts of memory without realizing it, or even take over Crichton's body completely. Harvey has separate thoughts and opinions from Crichton as well as competing goals that can often cause discord between the two.
- Crichton may speak out loud when addressing Harvey, and your character is welcome to react to that in any way appropriate, but unless they have the ability to hear thoughts, they will not hear any of Harvey's replies. Please be aware that anything Crichton knows, sees, or hears will also be perceived by Harvey. Harvey is capable of using his knowledge against others, but I will never do that without prior discussion.
Opt-out!
If any part of this makes you uncomfortable and you would rather not play with it/Crichton, please comment on this post to let me know. I will respect that with no questions asked!
